Ed Moffatt is a coffee connoisseur who owns and operates Common Room Roasters. Despite the name, Common Room is not your ordinary coffee shop. What started as a rolling coffee-cart is now a major force in the world of specialty coffee as a wholesale supplier and coffee consultancy.

20 years ago, Ed Moffatt came knocking on his local café’s door for a job. It was only a few years later that he was opening the doors of his own coffee shop. “You have to work in the face of adversity with the mindset of not knowing whether something is going to work out or not.” He worked 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for a few years until it became a booming business. After 9 years of blood, sweat, and coffee, he used his learnings to open Common Room Roasters. Little did he know, it would soon become a major force in the world of specialty coffee as a wholesale supplier and coffee consultancy.

Although Moffatt opened Common Room with some experience under his belt, he was still faced with many of the same challenges. “We started all over again from scratch. We opened the doors; we had to paint the walls and sand the tables ourselves.” He worked tirelessly to grow Common Room into the operation it is today. While Moffatt doesn’t have the most traditional success story—he was all in from the start, and that made all the difference.
